So what are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts. They are very powerful and potent plant derived extracts. Since they are derived from plants, they are often rich in antioxidants, as well as having antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Essential oils are widely used in holistic therapies and have been used for thousands of years. Each essential oil has its own aroma, chemical composition and therapeutic properties.
It should be noted that essential oils can be dangerous if used incorrectly and essential oils should never be used in its concentrated form!
Essential Oils can be extracted from various parts of the plant for example:
The Flowers, leaves, wood, bark, seeds, berries, roots, peel, fruit as well as resin.
How do essential oils work?
Essential oils work by being absorbed into the skin. The skin is a permeable barrier that is able to absorb fat-soluble and oil-soluble substances; however, it has trouble absorbing water-soluble substances. Due to the essential oil molecules being small in size they are easily absorbed into the skin once it has been applied, it is then able to pass through the epidermis of the skin (the outer most layer). Essential oils are also able to enter the skin through hair follicles as well as sweat glands. Essential oils are transdermal, this means that they are able to penetrate the various layers of the skin in order to reach the dermis (the bottom layer of the skin), the dermis contains many blood capillaries and therefore the essential oils can easily gain access to the body through the bloodstream. Once the essential oils have entered the bloodstream and “worked its magic” it is then expelled by the body through the kidneys (Via Urination), liver, skin (via sweating) or lungs (via exhaling).
